Sol Republic #OfficeTreats & 2015 Goal Setting

Thanks to Sol Republic I now have two items below that will help me in starting 2 of many new resolutions that I jotted down yesterday which included
1. to keep the house clean
2. to stay active and work out more than I had last year, setting aside time daily for some type of exercise.

Thanks to their new “Punk” wireless speaker, I could listen to music directly from my IPhone or IPod while I’m cleaning and just moving the tiny speaker and phone to every room. Surprisingly, just like I was late to catch on to ITunes, I was embarrassingly late to learn about the Bluetooth technology for speakers, including portable travel size ones like the one below. I’ve now cleaned the kitchen and the living room singing my favorite R&B songs that made the experience faster and more enjoyable which used to be something I dreaded.

Secondly, the “Everyday Active” Relays headphones came in handy when I recently traveled to Miami, Columbus and Las Vegas in the past few weeks. The reason why I loved them was their angled earbuds which allowed for me to toss, turn and run without having them fall out of my ears or move around as all others have in the past. This will come in handy as I plan to be more active not only in doors in the gym but outside activity that I tended to avoid in the past. Visit SolRepublic.com to learn more about their products that are affordable and make great presents for White Elephant gift exchanges, co-worker’s birthdays or sister’s graduation, especially those who will be traveling alot soon as I have and will be this year for Third Floor Network events across the globe.

2015 Goal Setting.
As I was writing this article I got an email from my mom about “goal setting” from her District Manager with an article by Darren Hardy and since then have decided to change my list of resolutions to a list of tangible, actionable “goals” after reading the article below. My mom, Maria Alba has been a successful entrepreneur and insurance business owner for over 20+ years for Farmers Insurance with my sisters Rachelle Cobarrubias and Chrystal Cruz, she can personally accredit setting goals as to one of the secrets of their yearly success in high volume of clients.

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 12.51.22 PM

Over the past year since deciding on starting my own marketing and production company independently versus signing on to be apart of another large corporate structure, I look back and know that it wouldn’t have been possible without executing a list of goals which included but not limited to launching the “Homegrown Hero” artists/athletes and celebrities returning to their highschool program that we did a few weeks ago in Las Vegas with Castro & The Audibles, shooting our first music and lyric videos with our new FourXample Productions video company, produced several sponsored events for advertiser brands while still continuing to book the most popular, credible or buzzworthy new artists like Nick Jonas, Mike Will Made It ft. Rae Sremmurd, Pusha-T (The Clipse), Alesso, Wiz Khalifa for partner digital, offline, radio or TV shows and much more. Take a read below and know that you can get started on listing your goals any day of the year, not having to wait for the apple to drop in Times Square to get you motivated. Shoot me an email at info@thirdfloornetwork.com with your list of goals for 2015. Looking forward to seeing you complete them!

The Life Changing Process of Goal-Setting
by Darren Hardy

While many people will be considering making a new year’s intention (and
ultimately fail!), I want you to be the success minded achiever that you
are and set your BHAG—Big Hairy Audacious Goal—for the year.

Here’s WHY goal-setting is important to you having the best year ever this
2015:

Years ago when I attended the funeral of Paul J. Meyer, I was reminded how full, rich and diverse a life he led. He achieved, experienced and contributed more than the lives of the average 20 people combined. Reading his obituary made me reassess the speed, quantity and sheer size of the goals I want to set for myself.

If Paul were here, he would tell you the reason for the quality and quantity of his successes came down to one skill: setting, sticking to and staying committed to BIG goals. In fact he wrote one of the first programs on the topic called “The Dynamics of Personal Goal-Setting.” A couple of ideas I’ll share with you come from my studies and practices of this program.

The Two Common Traits of Superachievers
I am often asked what common traits I observe as I interview and get to know many of today’s superachievers. The answer is easy because those common factors are shared by nearly 100 percent of top achievers. They are:

1) A relentless commitment to constant learning and;
2) Clear goals expressed in a beautifully crafted document detailing their
plans to achieve them.

Business 101: Goal Setting

You’ve probably read about the Harvard study below, but it’s worth reviewing again as we dedicate some significant time and energy to our decision to get serious about designing the life we want to lead.

Mark McCormick in his book What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School tells of a Harvard study conducted between 1979 and 1989.

In 1979, graduates of the MBA program were asked to set clear written goals for their future and their plans to accomplish them. It turned out only 3 percent of the graduates had written goals, 13 percent had goals but they were not in writing and 84 percent had no specific goals at all–aside from getting out of school and enjoying the summer.

Ten years later, in 1989, the researchers again interviewed the members of that same graduating class. They found that the 13 percent who had goals that were not in writing were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent of students who had no goals at all. Most surprisingly, they found that the 3 percent of graduates who had clear, written goals were earning, on average, 10 times more than 97 percent of their graduating class. The only difference between the groups was the clarity of goals they had set (and spelled out) for themselves when they graduated.

Now if you knew that stretching several hours out over eight weeks to devote to strategic goal-setting could multiply the results in your life by 10—surpassing the accomplishments of your peers, competitors, family members and neighbors—and produce 10 times more than what you are likely to achieve without defining your goals on paper—would you do it? Would it be worth it?

The Killer Advantage

No matter your background, education or current level of success, if you master the skills and processes I will take you through, you can instantly gain an advantage over everyone else around you. You can start to access more of the grand potential within yourself and achieve only in a few months or a year what it might take others their entire lifetime to accomplish. You can achieve vastly more in a shorter period than you ever imagined. The speed will amaze both you and the people around you.

No matter your lot in life you can win

I have a relative who is exponentially smarter than myself. In fact, he has a Ph.D. I, on the other hand, only finished one year of college. He is also incredibly talented—he plays several instruments, sings like an angel and has talents I can barely conceive of. He is a passionate romantic, has a warm and engaging personality and is generous, giving and loving. Not that I don’t possess some of these finer traits–but not anywhere near to the degree he has.

However, he is also nearly 50 years old, living in his mother’s home–the same one he grew up in–struggling to pay his bills (even though his room and board are free) and, of course, is incredibly unfulfilled, distraught and probably a bit depressed.

I have seen many people with average intelligence run circles around proclaimed geniuses. Why? The one who learns the skill of effective goal-setting and achieving has a better chance of becoming far more wealthy, successful and happier than many geniuses who don’t know what they really want and haven’t plotted a course toward their better future!

But I warn you, this is a serious program for serious people who want to create serious results.

Learning to set goals is a master skill of success. Without goals your life is like a boat without a rudder. You drift along with the current, inevitably crashing up on the rocks time and time again. Proper goal setting puts you in a speedboat and gives you a target to steer toward. You will go directly to your destination and with great speed.

HOW Goal Setting Actually Works: The Mystery ‘Secret’ Revealed

You only see, experience and get what you look for. If you don’t know what to look for, you certainly won’t get it.

By our very nature we are goal-seeking creatures. Our brain is always trying to align our outer world with what we’re seeing and expecting in our inner world. When you instruct your brain to look for the things you want, you will begin to see them. In fact, the object of your desire has probably always existed around you, but your mind and eyes weren’t open to “seeing” it.

This is actually how the Law of Attraction really works. It is not some mysterious, esoteric voodoo–which it sometimes sounds like. It’s far simpler and more practical than that.

We are bombarded with billions of sensory (visual, audio, physical) bytes of information each day. To keep ourselves from going insane, we ignore 99.9 percent of them. You only really see, hear or experience those upon which your mind focuses. This is why when you “think” something, it appears that you are miraculously drawing it into your life. In reality, you’re now just seeing what was already there. You ARE truly “attracting” it into your life. It wasn’t there before or accessible TO YOU until your thoughts focused and directed your mind to see it.

Make sense? It’s not mysterious at all; it’s actually quite logical. Now with this new perception, whatever your mind is thinking internally is what it will focus on and all of a sudden “see” within that 99.9 percent of remaining space.

Here’s an example: Did you ever buy a new car (or had a friend who did) and then you started to see that model and make ‘everywhere’? Seems like there are tons of them on the streets all of a sudden, doesn’t it? More likely than not, they’ve been there all along, but you weren’t paying attention to them. Thus, they didn’t really “exist” to you before.

So, when you define your goals you give your brain something new to look for and focus on. You give your mind a new set of eyes to see all the people, circumstances, conversations, resources, ideas and creativity surrounding you. With this new perspective, an inner itinerary, it can now proceed with matching up on the outside what you want most on the inside, your goal. It’s that simple, but the difference in how you see, experience and draw ideas, people and experiences into your life after you have clearly defined your goals is profound.

WHY Most Goal Setting Fails
Here are 5 big reasons goal setting fails:

1. You make a “wish list” and cross your fingers. As it says in the article, you cannot simply write down a list of wants on New Year’s Day, stick it in a drawer for the rest of the year and wait around for your life to change.

2. Your ideas are as clear as mud.
Your goals have to be crystal clear. You have to give clear instructions to your brain in order for it to see and “draw” into your sights what you need to accomplish your goals. Just like the combination on a lock, the digits in a phone number or an ATM code, if it’s off by only one digit it won’t
work.

3. You’re all talk.
Proclaiming your goal is just the starting point. Now you have to actually draw a map of exactly how you’re going to get there and define the resources you’ll need to arrive safely.

4. You have no “Houston.”
The management and control system necessary to operate your plan, keep you on track, measured and monitored through your journey through the unknown needs to be in place and/or accessible.

5. You lack reinforcements.
The support and guidance of people and resources you will need along the way for encouragement–and even a kick in the pants–is also key to accomplishing your goals.

Have You Met The Audibles? (GRAMMY Nominated Production Duo Who Worked With Justin Bieber, Lupe Fiasco, Young Money & Many More)

By Marina A. Moreno

“Have you met The Audibles?” That’s a question that should quickly be answered with a ‘yes.’ If you beg to differ and still believe you haven’t, think about this; Have you heard Justin Bieber’s “Hold Tight”, Young Money’s “Girl I Got You” or GRAMMY nominated Lupe Fiasco’s “Bitch Bad” – you’ve heard the work of The Audibles.

Screen Shot 2014-11-21 at 10.16.57 AM

Made up of Dominic “DJ Mecca” Jordan and Jimmy “Jimmy G” Giannos, The Audibles first came together in 2007 on the set of Polow Da Don’s R&B group, I-15’s ‘Lost In Love’ video shoot in their hometown of Las Vegas, NV. Jimmy G expressed great interest in working with one of the group’s singer’s, Castro, whom DJ had grown up with. Their humble beginning started when they would perform together during lunch time or at talent shows at their local Mohave High School, DJ acting as beatbox to the dancing singers. After Jimmy met up with DJ to create, the two quickly established an understanding and appreciation for each other’s style and talents and wasted no time in creating the power production duo that we know today as, The Audibles.

Screen Shot 2014-11-21 at 10.23.51 AM

The duo’s first major production hit was their work behind Interscope artist, Mishon’s 2009 Billboard hit, “Turn It Up” which featured rapper Roscoe Dash. The song went on to climb the charts and led The Audibles to produce additional hits for Young Money including “We Are Young Money” and the previously mentioned “Girl I Got You.” The Audibles also gained partnership with Grammy award winning songwriter, Poo Bear, which led them to produce hits for Red Man and Method Man, and even gain much deserved respect for production on Lupe Fiasco’s L.A.S.E.R.S album. With an ecstatic combination of drums, keyboard, soft synths and live percussions, it only makes sense that The Audibles be granted with all they deserve.

Moving forward to 2011, The Audibles also became responsible for birthing the production behind four songs off rapper, Yelawolf’s debut album, “Radioactive” which included tracks co-produced by hip hop legend, Eminem. In 2012 the pair re-connected with Lupe Fiasco for his controversial, “Bitch Bad” and assisted on Poo Bear’s “BEATS 2 BREAK UP 2.”

Screen Shot 2014-11-21 at 10.23.14 AM

Most recently added to their list of credentials working with artists’ such as Justin Bieber, 50 Cent, Tyga, Chris Brown, Lloyd, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana, Kendrick Lamar, R. Kelly and even Snoop Dogg. The pair is currently gearing up for the release of former I-15 member, Castro’s debut solo album, “You Fetish” in which they produced the entire album along side Castro and Poo Bear’s lyrical creativity.

Be sure to follow The Audibles on Twitter, Instagram, Soundcloud and even Facebook to stay updated on all they have coming to your ears including Castro’s “You Fetish” which drops early 2015. Trust me when I say, that’s one album you don’t want to miss out on, one of the best we’ve heard in awhile from start to finish. #noexaggeration

SHOW ME: Funk Volume x Famous Stars and Straps Present: FVMILY Halloween Bash Ft. TRAVIS BARKER, HOPSIN & More at The Observatory OC 10.30.14 PHOTOS

Written by Marina Moreno

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 9.10.18 AM

WHAT:
Funk Volume x Famous Stars and Straps Present:
FVMILY Halloween Bash at The Observatory OC

WHO:
Hopsin, Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton, Swizz, DJ Hoppa, Snow Tha Product, Jon Connor, Mod Sun, Xzibit and Travis Barker on drums.

WHEN:
October 30, 2014 10:30pm-2am

This past weekend was probably one for the books for many people coast to coast. Halloween landed on a Friday, which meant the festivities would carry on past one day. However, there is one crew who got things started a day prior. They are, Funk Volume.

On Thursday October 30th, the most notorious independent label, Funk Volume, held their first ever FVMILY Halloween Bash at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California. In collaboration with Travis Barker’s, Famous Stars and Straps, FV founder Dame Ritter pulled off a magnificent, high energy show with performances from Xzibit, Snow Tha Product, Jon Connor, Mod Sun and FV signees, Jarren Benton, SwizZz, Hopsin, Dizzy Wright, DJ Hoppa on the tables all night, and of course Travis Barker. Prior to jumping on stage, the backstage area was busy as well. Though many might think it’s always one big party going on behind the scenes, it’s not that exactly. With all the guys lending a few minutes to SKEE’s new series, The Calm Before The Storm, slapping hands with familiar faces and saying cheese for photographers, it was proven there’s always work to be done even before the final assignment.

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 9.14.32 AM

As the evening carried on and The Observatory filled up with barely any more standing room (upstairs and downstairs) with crowd favorites Mod Sun, Snow Tha Product, Jon Connor and West Coast veteran X to the Z. DJ Hoppa pumped up the crowd for the first batter up from FV – Jarren Benton. Jarren did one hell of a job as the first of the final acts not just because he jumped from one side of the stage to the other, interacting with the crowd, but he also brought out the next hitter – Dizzy Wright. The crowd seemed to get louder and louder with every song and got a hundred times more wild when Dizzy crowd surfed through the front and middle row. But it didn’t end there.

Next up was FV’s other emcee, SwizZz. As probably known as one of the most lowkey of the bunch, SwizZz didn’t act as anything close; dominating the stage and owning the crowd, it was evident that he felt right at home and Santa Ana was welcoming him with open ears. At the closing of his set, SwizZz began the chant for his next label mate, none other than, Hopsin. Face painted and suited up from the hat down to the shoes, Hop continued to feed the crowd what they came out for. However what ended up being the most notable part of his performance was when he put complete trust into the hands of his fans as he dove and had them carry him from the stage to the back of the venue, hold him up to spit a lyric or two, then help him jump to the second floor. But it didn’t stop there. Hopsin jumped from the second floor back down to the crowd! And with their assistance, made it back to the stage. Never in my life, and I could tell never in half of those fans lives, have we ever seen that be done. If fans didn’t believe they were in for a treat, they knew now.

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 9.15.23 AM

With the night coming to an end, and the lights dimming down, whispers began to flood the air; Where was Travis Barker? Before everyone could get riled up, out came one of music’s most legendary drummers – Travis Barker. Face painted just like Hopsin, the two closed out the show bringing out the whole crew. Backstage, fans were excited to see local hometown hero, Phora from the 714 hanging with the Funk Volume family, commenting in hopes of what would be a memorable collaboration. He mentions he is planning to release his new projects, “Nights Like These” in the next few months.

Have You Met Deezy Jonez?

Written By Marina Moreno

As a writer and interviewer, I come across a large mass of talented individuals all aiming for a spot in the hip-hop culture. And by culture I mean a solid spot in the minds of hip-hop heads, sold out venues and respect as an emcee. However, the music industry and rap world is very raw and critical. As a huge hip-hop appreciator myself, it’s safe to admit that hip-hop is the one culture that will either love and fu*k with you, or shrug you off and push your tape to the side. But can you blame us? This game is survival of the fittest and with many emcees stepping up their game independently, (a.k.a. they are a lot smarter about all the pros and cons of the industry), rap has become even more of a “chew you up and spit you out” type of fam. However there is one rapper who is willing to challenge all that we thought we knew. He is, Deezy Jonez.

Screen Shot 2014-10-31 at 7.30.44 PM

The Minneapolis, Minnesota bred spitter has been knocking on the door of rap for quite some time. Having already successfully dropped two projects, “Chapo” and “Northern Lights.” it was only proper that Deezy pack up his rhymes and attempt to leave his mark here in Los Angeles, California. Along with his label mates, Just Josh Music Group, Deezy made sure executives, writers, videographers and more, knew exactly who he was; what he was about; and what he was about to do for himself, his family and the Music Retox team fronted by CEO & Day 1 believer, Eldon Peterson.

Straight off the plane in LA, Deezy sat down with “What’s Dropping” host Jorel Quinn at All Def Digital where he offered advice to those on the verge of emerging, spit a LIVE version of his lyrically impactful “Work Flow” on SKEE247’s “The Kick It” show on the new DASH Radio, climbed to the roof of Hip Hop DX for their infamous “Hollywood Freestyle”, snapped photos in Popular Demand gear as YouTube Space LA, stopped to pose for pictures with fans, caught up with his CaliExclusive fam and most importantly wrapped up his first collaborative EP with live arrangement by Just Josh Music Group. Though there’s more stops in which he left his trail, we are going to let it your curiosity linger so that you continue to follow the Minnesota rapper to see where he will be spreading his talents next.

Screen Shot 2014-10-31 at 7.30.53 PM

Fast-forwarding, I bet you’re wondering what separates Deezy from every other lyricist, right? Well, we could go on to note and bullet-point various reasons by referring to his music that’s already out for the world to listen to – but we’re not. Lets focus on the fact that Deezy has, what I like to call, “rookie hunger”, leaking from his glands. While on the road with Deezy this past week, it was almost impossible to not feel like you were in the presence of someone who you just knew was destined for major recognition. Constantly confidently spoken, Deezy tackled each meeting with our Third Floor Network friends and each approach with ease. Anyone who is familiar with that “rookie hunger” knows that’s when an emcee goes the hardest at all times, even when the cameras are off. They are at the stage of not paying attention to competition due to the fact that they are too busy focusing on how they are going to detach themselves from the norm. That’s Deezy. He doesn’t give a flying F*ck to any negativity around him because he is positive he will succeed in his career, even when it’s just beginning.

Currently Deezy is prepping for the release of his first EP with live band entitled “Midnight Lusso,” along with the FourXample Productions produced visual to accompany it.

Hold on tight. This is only the beginning. Don’t forget where you heard of him first and thank us later.

Have You Met, Just Josh Music Group?

Written by Marina Moreno

We constantly hear the infamous Bob Marley lyric, “the good thing about music is when it hits you feel no pain.” For just about everybody, the genre of music that gives you that hard hitting feeling, is different. For some it may be soft R&B, and for some it may be heavy metal. However, one style that can never be denied or debated is the sounds of LIVE music. And no, I’m not just talking about hearing a DJ spin live; I’m talking about an actual live band. One trio of young men not only have the skill to knock you off your seat and onto your feet, but they have talent bold enough to reinvent what we thought we knew about live instruments, and build a career filled with longevity while doing it. I’m talking about, Just Josh Music Group, signed to Music Retox Entertainment founded by CEO Eldon Peterson.

Hailing from H-Town (Houston, TX), Just Josh Music Group is made up of three self-taught instrumentalists; Josh Conerly (Drummer), Josh Henderson (Keyboardist) and Justin Clemons (Drummer). The three have already gained exposure in their hometown of Houston backing several popular local artists, predominantly Gospel early on and have sparked global attention with a live arrangement of Drake’s “I’m On One” and Hit-Boy’s “Ni%%as In Paris” garnering thousands of views on YouTube. This week, the producers made their way to Los Angeles, California, to give LA natives a taste of what they bring to the table. For a week straight, we hit the city with the 3 alongside fellow label mate, Deezy Jonez & manager Eldon as they met executives from established magazines, radio stations & media outlets such as DASH Radio, Hip Hop DX, Hip Hop Wired, Myspace, YouTubeSpaceLA, bBooth, Popular Demand, Homegrown Radio, and All Def Digital,to name a few. Not to mention, they recorded a collaboration LIVE EP with Deezy entitled “Midnight Lusso” and music video in the midst of it all at the infamous 17 Hertz Studios shot by FourXample Productions. How they managed to pull through and pull it off is more than we can praise. With the ambition, drive and dedication, Just Josh Music Group proved that with their constant hunger, nothing is impossible. Special thanks to everyone who took their time out of their busy days to spend time with these talented guys that are just beginning their successful careers in music. Hope you are excited as we are to be apart of the early stages of their journey.

While embarking on their numerous media stops to friends of our Third Floor Network, I was able to chop it up with the trio and discover what it was that kept them so grounded and humble. It was without a doubt, their family. With such a strong support system behind them, it was only right that they continued to bring up their families over and over – and I’m not complaining. Whether it was letting it be known that they were the first ones they planned to give back to when they “make it”, to having Josh C.’s mother, father and son make an appearance at the video shoot. It was beyond refreshing to see such a young group of men so poised and well rounded. In an industry that is easy to get lost and caught up in, the fear of them wandering too far, doesn’t seem to be an issue on the rise.

Their advice to all you hustlers on the road to success? “Stay with it. You’re gonna get better with time. It won’t happen overnight. Be consistent. Be persistent. And don’t let any mediocre sh*t slip through the cracks.”

See more photos from their LA visit below and be on the lookout for Just Josh Music Group’s collaborative EP with Deezy Jonez dropping sometime this winter!

(INTERVIEW) Your Morning Poison On Titan Internet Radio Hosted By Holly Santiago Ft. Roslynn Cobarrubias

photo 2
Had a blast returning to Cal State Fullerton to join fellow Walnut High School alum (Class of 2012) Christianne Holly Santiago on her Wednesday morning radio show called, “Your Morning Poison.” Walking thru campus down under the library where Titan Internet Radio still operates several years later with old rugs STILL on the wall gave me a sense of familiarity and comfortability before the interview. It was a humbling experience to return back to the place where working in the music industry was a developing dream after years as a working professional and now business owner. Holly and I discussed topics that came directly from CSUF students about the value of internships, how to network properly and developing your personal brand. I hope that anyone listens to it HERE or reads the interview below is inspired in whatever field they are in to continue to stay focused on their own dreams knowing firsthand that they are achievable. Special thanks to Holly and the TIR team for the hospitality! Excited to see where her journey takes her with such a great start as talented radio host/DJ and promotions director with experience at Seattle’s infamous KUBE 93 station, she has a promising career ahead of her.

From David L: What did you initially want to be before you started your career? And when did you ultimately get on the path to where you’re at today?

I initially wanted to get into politics, my dream was to be a lawyer and the Mayor of the city where I’m from, Walnut, CA. It was a long “Alchemist” type of journey that I had that brought me to a career in music. I always loved music since a young age, I couldn’t sing or perform though, and it wasn’t until I was aware that you could work in other aspects of the music industry without being the actual entertainer or performer that I decided to pursue it full time. I was always the lunch time DJ in elementary school to high school, but it wasn’t until I started my own radio show and started taking radio broadcasting classes that I REALLY felt passionate in knowing what I wanted to do in life. It took working at several companies in different parts of the music industry to really understand where I want to be now which is increasing awareness, collaboration and monetization for artists in all areas which I work in today.

I know you started getting involved with radio and the music industry in college. Could you tell me about how you led to decide you wanted to work in the music industry?

Initially I wanted to just work in radio, but when I learned the truth behind commercial radio and you can’t choose the music you play during your programs, I began to think of other things that I wanted to do. I started meeting and getting to know the artists around me that I interviewed on my Third Floor Radio college radio show (where we had freedom to play the music and artists we wanted) and they became friends. I realized how much help they needed whether it was someone helping to throw their events, creating their online presence, promoting their music, etc. I realized there was an entire industry for music outside of just the restrictions of radio. I wanted to learn every piece of the puzzle so I could better help not only the artists but those that wanted to create their own careers in the industry.

Aside from school what else did you do to prepare yourself to begin your career?

Internships, volunteering, blogging and event producing was the #1 preparation for the real world when it came to establishing my career. After reading the book, “The Celestine Prophecy” I realized that there was no such thing as a coincidence. Everything and everyone we meet including our positive or negative attitude ultimately created or blocked the synchronicity in our lives. I started to produce concerts and help the artists that I loved that were featured on the radio show and starting learning the business. I would volunteer to help larger events to learn their process and how they made money alongside finding internships in radio, marketing, and networking. At every internship I took on, I considered it as serious job whether or not I was getting paid. I was the first person there and the last person to leave, putting my best foot forward so that anyone I worked with either wanted to hire me or recommend me to someone or a company that was hiring which they always did. Every job I received was via personal referral.

From David L: Any tips on how to get started and where to go for internships? What do companies look for in their interns/employees? How do we stand out?

Think about everything you love. What radio stations do you listen to, what clothes do you wear, what magazines or blogs do you read, what bands do you love. Because you are already passionate about these things you’re already an asset to them because you are a genuine fan of the brand or company. Find a contact and let them know you are interested in interning for them. You may have to do a few cold calls but chances are you might already know someone that worked there or knows someone there. Companies look for interns that they don’t have to constantly tell what to do. The interns are bringing ideas of how they could help their place of business increase awareness or sales. Research the companies that you are interviewing with and let them know of ideas that you have to help them increase awareness or sales. For example, they always love to reach college students and you are within that community, let them know that when they hire you that you will help grow that audience from your peers and that you’ll help gather ideas and opinions from people your age. You stand out not looking for a hand out but instead looking to gain valuable experience and relationships versus the thousands of there doing the opposite and when working there are just looking for a quick paycheck or name of a cool company that you work for to tell your friends about. Think of the word “internship” synonymous to the word “experience,” just as college students looking to develop careers in the medical field also complete a “residency,” it’s important to your career to get real-time experience before people hire you as a professional.

When you actually get the job, listen carefully daily of what your boss needs whether it be a daily task or advice of where to get the best chicken wings in the area. People remember people that help them. A great article on “10 Things That Should Be On Your Resume” could be found here that you might not have thought of.

Where and how did you get your first connections?

My very first connections started with the people around me. There were artists and creatives in the area that I’d often hang out with. Whether it was dancers I’d love to dance at the club with or local artists that I would go to a local show with. We started going to shows like hip hop performance clubs like UNITY or Lotus back in the day as well as things like the breakdancer B-Boy Summit and I started to meet more artists and their teams. I became genuine friends with these people and they became apart of my life. Over the years these emerging artists soon became the established artists of today, that I still could work with knowing our long history together including but not limited to The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, Dwele and Talib Kweli.

You’ve given me great advice on networking that will help me for the rest of my career. Could you share that with us now?

Networking is not just asking for what you want, 99% of the people you’ll meet until you have established a career will think they don’t need anything from you or a relationship with you. In the initial conversation, listen to what the person does, where they work or what they love and offer them something before you ask for anything.

IE: If you meet a record executive of your favorite band, mention you loved the band and you’d love to write a review of their concert and take photos at the event to share on your socials or blog or if you meet a potential boss and she says she loves steak, recommend the best steakhouse you know in town and offer to take her to lunch, just to pick her brain on advice in exchange. One good gesture will go a long way, some will get returned and others won’t but continue to pay it forward and it will eventually reciprocate. Read HERE for more tips on effective networking.

How did you get your start being the Director of Artist Relations at MySpace Inc.?

When I first met the founders of Myspace.com, I was the Director of Marketing for the National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP) and LA Music Network (LAMN), my boss Tess Taylor was the president and would create workshops, panels and showcases alongside produce her own speaking engagements for people in the music industry. Her strong point was also providing career advice to every age group alongside start up music companies marketing advice. At one of the events I worked at, I met her friend Chris DeWolfe, founder of Myspace.com. I loved social networking at the time, Friendster was my main account to promote my college radio show but felt it to be too restrictive. I was one of the first to hear about Myspace.com and created a profile quickly and loved the expressive freedom it gave you.

When we met with Chris, my boss told him that I promoted a radio show as well as my own events. After the initial meeting, she set one up with him and he asked me if I had any ideas of how to market Myspace.com to artists and creative’s. At the time, I was working on helping promote the Black Eyed Peas new music video that I helped introduce a director friend to produce after he sent me a great treatment for and mentioned we were throwing a party for it in a few weeks. I told him that we could promote Myspace on the flyer digitally and offline as well as integrated them into the party with giveaways. This became one of the first Myspace parties and I continued to do the same thing bringing artist opportunities via events or programs to the platform for the next 10 years of my life.

Who are some of your favorite/most memorable artists that you’ve worked with and why?

I wrote a blog about my top 9 memories and artists I worked with at Myspace that could be found here: http://thirdfloornetwork.com/2013/12/11/my-top-9-myspace-memories-over-the-past-9-years-3/ – there are so many ranging from A Tribe Called Quest to Drake to Pitbull, but the top 3 include when Justin Timberlake bought/became an investor in Myspace, it was fun working on JT song premieres or secret shows as I was a big N’Sync fan growing up. Another was our Jay Z show in NYC where kids slept outside to get tickets to the free show that otherwise couldn’t afford a ticket to a Jay Z concert but have been fans since they were kids. Some of the kids in line had tattoos of Jay-Z on their arms or named their kids Jay but have never been to a show. We produced the show in an intimate 700 person venue the day before he had 2 sold out shows playing for over 40,000 people in 2 days at Madison Square Garden. Lastly, when Justin Bieber came to my office with his mom and a year later I was interviewing him on the red carpet of the GRAMMYS was amazing, made me realize first hand how dreams really do come true and how those in the music industry can instantly change people’s lives.

You’ve worked in so many fields of the music industry. From radio, production, to marketing, and more, what was it like for you to be learning these new tasks and jobs?

Because I was passionate about the music industry and learning every aspect of it, whether or not I was getting paid, they never felt like “jobs.” A job to me was like my first job working at the West Covina Mall selling shoes at The Athlete’s Foot, although I loved it too and loved playing music there, I wanted to leave as soon as my shift was over, standing all day. When I worked in any part of the music industry, every time I learned something new it was beyond rewarding, I felt that it was kind of like a video game, learning each step as each task was given, doing something I loved. I heard early on to “find something you are passionate about to work in and you’ll never feel like you are working,” and this became my reality. I understand my life’s purpose in helping people.

From Leslie: What are the steps you took to maintain your name in the music industry? And how were you able to get some of the top names and artists to be a part of your career?

I always loved working with new artists that I believed in and loved their music. My “Third Floor Radio” show stands for 3 levels: past, present and future and my favorite part was highlighting those that people didn’t really know about but were on the cusp of breaking if the right people heard them. I helped a lot of new artists out whether it was through the radio show (giving them their first interview) or booking their show by having them perform at one of my events or creating their Myspace profiles for them and a lot of the artists remember that because Myspace really helped their careers take off. Some of the biggest DJs and artists today started on Myspace, and am grateful to be apart of those times. And until this day I help artists get booked to perform on TV for the first time or help them get their first big check from an advertiser sponsored program/event and they always remember who was the “first” to do these things. Thanks to the people around me I’ve been able to maintain those initial relationships and help a lot of these artists develop into the top names they are today either directly or indirectly introducing them to someone in my network.

How do you handle the pressure of dealing with everything at once? And how did working in the music industry change you emotionally?

I’m a very emotional person. One of my biggest challenges to this day is not to take everything personal. For example, I’ll meet someone who has a full time job at their job and I’ll offer to help them, say it’s booking an artist. Instead of returning the favor, they constantly call me and never tell their employers of how they are getting the artists. They get rewarded with a salary but don’t provide me any compensation or recognition for the artist that was booked via my relationship. It’s hard not to take a scenario like that personal and the initial reaction is to get emotional but I’ve learned to suppress the emotions and focus at the task at hand and know that everyone might not mean to do the things they do because they haven’t been taught how to network or work with someone properly. I handle dealing with everything at once by delegating what I know I can’t do or not great at to someone who could do it better for me and either pay them or reciprocate the favor.

From David L: Any stories of failure before you became so successful? If so, how did you bounce back?

I failed at trying to do everything at once. I had a radio show, produced events, had 2 internships, was going to college, DJing, started a clothing line, while helping artists develop their career. Doing multiple things wasn’t the issue, it was delegating tasks to a team or inviting help. I feared that if I didn’t do everything myself that it wouldn’t get it done. I thought I could do it all myself and eventually spread myself too thin. What was previously fun now became stressful and I disappointed a lot of people because I was excited about wanting to help but I just didn’t have the time when doing 100 things at once, I eventually burned myself out.

I also wrote a blog about my initial failure in trying to learn how to “network” here:
http://thirdfloornetwork.com/2014/08/14/5369/ – someone called me out on how I didn’t know how to properly network at a young age that I’m grateful for.

Luckily, one person that I met with was completely honest with me. At the time I mentioned how it would be great to promote my college radio show flyers at his professional training studio or announce the program in his class without offering anything in return for such a gesture such as a featured interview on the radio show or helping him market his training services. He said bluntly to me that day, “you don’t understand networking.” This puzzled me because I was involved with several networking organizations and my entire mission statement was centered around wanting to help people. After initial shock statement, I learned of what I was doing wrong and was glad that he took the time to explain his initial frustration that stemmed from others (mostly younger) also making the same mistake.

I was giving the impression that all I cared about from the relationship was what I could personal gain, without giving much thought to what they had to personally gain from either helping me or a long term business and personal relationship. From that point on, I vowed to trust synchronicity and karma and help those that I believed in, first without expecting anything in return, especially those who were able to “pay it forward” in helping another person within my network. Those that didn’t offer the reciprocation of also helping someone else or myself were less likely to get a response after the initial non circular experience.

I feel blessed now to have that experience so that I could tell others not to make the same mistakes I did. =)

How do you multitask?

I love what I do so I love to do everything I do and learning each task doesn’t become a burden, but here are some key points to keep in mind when having to do several things at the same time such as having multiple jobs or responsibilities:

1.Establish your goals. Think with the end in mind. If choosing between two things to do, go forward with the one that could bring you one step closer to your goal, even if it’s a small thing such as following up via email with a potential future mentor or making a list of bands you want to potentially interview. You could always get back to the other things later but want to make sure you get done first what is moving in the same direction.

2. Give time to complete hard tasks for your full attention. Let it be known
to family, friends (and yourself) that you need an hour or two that you are in deep concentration or focus on one thing that requires focus such as studying, producing a presentation, prepping for an interview, etc. Plan time to have time so you don’t feel pressured to rush to get it done or don’t even try because the task seems too daunting and you feel you are busy with prior commitments to everyone around you.

3. Make a list of every task that needs to be done in an excel or some type of easy to manage tracking form. Prioritize the asks into “Urgent and Important,” “Important but not urgent,” and “Would Like To Do But Not Urgent” – to simplify you could tag them as A, B or C. Go thru your day and try to get at least A done if you have everything you need, if not, go back to it and do as many A’s as possible. Move to B’s and C’s if those tasks get accomplished, that way each day you are getting the most important and urgent things done first. They could be small things such as getting the drain fixed or as big as finishing a term paper. It will help you to not procrastinate or waste time on things that aren’t important that seem urgent until you write them down in your list with other things you need to do. Will start to feel great to check things off your list daily.

4. Use wait time efficiently in between different projects. IE if you know you are taking the train to work, plan to create your grocery list on the train and not in the middle of the work day or when you get home and you are already tired.

5. Plan for something YOU want to do each day as something important. IE: exercise, watch reality TV with your boyfriend, buy ice cream or call an old friend to catch up that way you also feel rewarded for your hard work of doing multiple things at once by doing one or more things that give you pleasure each day. Stop doing the things or being around the people that drain your time or doing the things you dread, you could pay someone to do those things and/or reward yourself for completing them.

6. Get comfortable with saying, “No.” Your true colleagues, friends and family will understand not having the bandwidth to do what they need your help in. Even if they don’t, it’s okay. It’s YOUR time. You don’t owe anyone anything. If they helped you in the past, let them know you will return the favor but at this right second you can’t (maybe provide an alternative) and move on. Don’t get stuck on guilt and let them know the better you can take care of yourself and your goals/duties, the better you will be available to help others such as them in the future. This is a hard one that I struggle with everyday, but you’ll be surprised at how much time opens up in your schedule when you remove doing things for other people.
