POW! WOW! Long Beach announces the POW! WOW!School of Music Long Beach (PWSoM), a weeklong music mentorship program, will be coming to Long Beach from June 22 27, 2015. The program will provide local and young musicians of diverse backgrounds between the ages of 18 and 24 an opportunity to collaborate with music industry professionals and influencers in a unique environment. mydiveo.com is a media sponsor for the event.
“We’re stoked to bring the POW! WOW! School of Music to Long Beach, a cultural hub and a place many of the POW! WOW! Long Beach staff call home. We are hoping that this first event will seed another positive movement that brings together local and national musicians to collaborate while creating synergy between art and music,” stated Andy Song, founder / codirector of PWSoM. “POW! WOW! School of Music was created in partnership with Flexfit in Kaka’ako, HI back in 2013 as a youth music workshop. This year the program has expanded to Austin at South by Southwest (SXSW) and now Long Beach.”
The Edison Theatre in Downtown Long Beach will host the PWSoM. The week long program will consist of daily workshops with the selected participants, mentors, and special guests that consist of professional musicians and cultural tastemakers. Through this unique dynamic, mentors and students will compose, brainstorm, explore, and create together. The participants will collaborate on music ensembles, including the opportunity to produce original music that will be performed at key events during POW! WOW! Long Beach festivities.
Kicking off the event week on Monday, June 22 will be a special “POW! WOW! Dinner and a Mixtape” event hosted by the renowned DJ Neil Armstrong. The opening night dinner event will give the public an opportunity to meet some of the artists that will be beautifying the city of Long Beach, while sharing great food by The Federal Bar. DJ Neil Armstrong’s mixtape music will provide the soundtrack to the evening and a special performance from the POW! WOW!! School of Music will cap off the night. All guests of the event will get a free download of DJ Neil Armstrong’s complete library of mixes with their dinner reservation.
The culminating event will be a performance by the students showcasing their original works during Downtown Long Beach Associates’ (DLBA) Summer and Music (SAM) festival titled, “720° on Pine,” on Saturday, June 27 at 5:00 PM. This event is free and open to the public and located on 7th and Pine Ave. PWSoM will also perform at the Long Beach Museum of Art on June 26 at 7:00 PM during the “Vitality and Verve: Transforming the Urban Landscape” opening reception and at the Varden Hotel in Downtown Long Beach during the “Ruck Out” event on Saturday, June 27.
Directors, mentors, and special guests will provide fresh ideas and innovative teaching styles to the students. Each was selected for their artistic and musical background and contributions. mydiveo.com will be filming exclusive solo “diveos” of selected students as well as their final performances.

About POW! WOW!School of Music
Back in 2013, POW! WOW! Hawaii and Flexfit teamed up to give birth to a music initiative called POW! WOW! School of Music (PWSOM). Its purpose was to establish an educational platform that gives young local musicians not only the opportunity to meet and connect with other music professionals, but also to be exposed to unfamiliar musical territories so that they can expand their horizons. As PWSOM has been held in conjunction with POW! WOW!, participants have composed and written new songs and performed at several key POW! WOW! events and closing ceremonies. Rather than a competition, PWSOM harbors a sense of companionship amongst the participants. And as the family grew from its success in Hawaii, PWSOM has recently expanded to SXSW and Long Beach.
