This was my 2nd year getting to be a fly on the wall to the students that were coached by music teachers Curtis and Annie Kamiya throughout the weeks of Pow Wow Hawaii, and my love for the programs grows with every chance I get to hear the students play, talk to them or watch them perform. The talented students are chosen from various schools to play in 4 different bands to create original music pieces that are then performed in front of a large crowd of over 10,000 during the Pow Wow festival where the murals throughout the city were revealed. The murals are painted by over 50 top artists flown in to participate in a week long exhibition across several buildings in Honolulu. We each got a chance to speak on panels or had individual workshops to speak about various topics ranging from musical journey to the actual business of music.
Watch the video directed by 0484 CREATIVE to see more from the talented students and if you haven’t had a chance to make it to a festival, make sure you go see them in 2015. Special thanks to Andy and Flexfit, Pow Wow creators Jasper and Amy Wong, Tiffany of Fresh Cafe Hawaii, DJ SuperCW and Sarah Honda for their hard work in putting the festival and music program together every year. Hoping I get to come back next year and spend more time with the students, recording another radio special like the one below.
